It was just a few years ago that Thai of the lower classes might deny he’s gay, associating the word with being anally receptive (the equivalent Thai gay slang term for “bottom man” is kween or gay-kween), because everyone knew that gà'tuhy were the kween. Because of the distinction, it is more common for a barboy (a male sex worker), whose sexual orientation is often the subject of great speculation, to declare in English or Thai that he’s “gay.”

Former actress Jim Sara claims that she was not only Thailand’s very first transsexual to be officially recognized as ‘Miss’, but also the first to have full sex-operation surgery. For the first time in English, here is her story on how she became Thailand’s first ‘real’ ladyboy.

A native of Nakhorn Sawan province, Miss Jim first hit the limelight in her teens when she acted in a series of films – each one playing the part of an actual women. According to the film crew and fans, Jim was so cute in those days, that everyone mistook her for a Tom-boy! And even after she gave up performing for the cameras and took up the normal working life, people around her still believed she was just a girl disguised as a boy. Jim relates the story of the time she was employed at a fancy hotel. One day, on being approached by one the hotel bosses she was taken aside and informed that it was against staff policy to hire Tom-boys. She was instructed that from that day onwards, unless she went back to dressing as she should – as a proper female – she would be fired!

Fed-up with the miserly pay of hotel work, Jim changed direction and got herself a job as a well-paid tour guide. She admits that she had a great time with her new chosen career and managed to save plenty of cash. So much in fact, that she was able to establish her own bar – aimed at gays. Her bar was soon a hit with the local and expat ‘pink’ communities, especially when she thought the idea up of secretly showing gay sex movies. Not for long though, her bar was busted by the police; Jim was arrested, her bar shut down and she lost all her money.

Devastated at such bad luck, Jim packed her suitcase and headed for London at the advice of an English friend she had met while working as a guide. Wanting to travel as a ‘woman’, Jim decided to travel on her sister’s passport and left her ‘male’ one at home. Not long after, Jim secured herself work in a Thai restaurant and she was back to earning decent cash.

By chance, while flicking through a copy of a local newspaper, Jim came across an advertisement from a London hospital looking for sex-operation ‘case study’ applicants. It was 1976 and Jim was just 23 years old. Jim jumped at the opportunity of a free sex-operation as no such thing was available in Thailand in those days. Mind you, Jim wasn’t the only one to apply for such a great opportunity and on the day of application she was surprised to meet another 100 or so transsexual hopefuls. She was the only Thai and one of just three Asians.

Ladyboy Becomes Mayor of Oregon: Stu Rasmussen

Rasmussen served two terms as mayor of Silverton, Oregon, back in the late '80s and early '90s, before he went public with his sexual reawakening, long locks of red curly hair and a can-do attitude.
"I just happen to be transgendered - something I didn't even know the word for until I discovered it on the Internet," he says on his Rasmussen for Mayor website.

"I've been a crossdresser or transvestite my whole life, only 'coming out' recently and thereby discovering that life goes on very nicely."

Subliminal Message to Hollywood: Deception

Plot Summary

Accountant Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) is an auditor with little to no social life. One night while working late in a boardroom he is interrupted by a lawyer, Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman), who befriends him and offers him marijuana. After a long conversation, Jonathan takes the subway home where he has a brief encounter with a blond woman (Michelle Williams) while waiting on the train. Upon returning home he notices a pipe in his bedroom is leaking and leaving a stain.

Jonathan contacts Wyatt the next day and they play tennis after work. Afterward they stop by Wyatt's lavish apartment where Jonathan borrows an expensive suit. They meet again for lunch the next day and upon leaving Wyatt intentionally takes Jonathan's mobile phone instead of his own, forcing a trade. He mentions he will be in London on business for the next few weeks.

When Jonathan realizes the phones have been switched he attempts to contact Wyatt but does not reach him. He is soon contacted by a woman (Natasha Henstridge) who asks if he is free that night. He informs her that he is and agrees to meet her. When she arrives they proceed directly to a hotel room to have sex and Jonathan realizes that Wyatt must be on some type of exclusive list. Following this encounter, Jonathan walk down a busy street and takes a look of a woman (Natasha Henstridge) as she appears on the front cover of magazine.

When Wyatt calls the next day he encourages Jonathan to continue his participation with other list members. Upon doing so he has an encounter with an older woman (Charlotte Rampling) who explains more of the list's rules: the initiator pays for the room, no names are exchanged, there is no conversation and no rough play. Jonathan continues to participate over the next few weeks with several anonymous partners.

One night after initiating another encounter, Jonathan is surprised to find that his partner is the blond woman he met while waiting for the train. When she begins to undress he stops her and tells her that they had met once before. He requests that she have dinner with him and they order room service and talk for hours. The next day Jonathan rejects other callers from the list but when the blond woman calls again they agree to meet for dinner in Chinatown. They then proceed to a hotel where she requests some ice. When Jonathan returns to the room she is gone and there is blood on the bedsheets. Someone knocks him out from behind and when he wakes up the bed has been made. He contacts the police and explains to the Detective (Lisa Gay Hamilton) that the woman is missing but that he has little to no information about her. She doubts his story and his sanity.

Upon returning home Jonathan is surprised to find Wyatt waiting for him and demanding that he steal millions from the corporation he will begin to audit in a few days. Jonathan does so but only because he fears for the safety of the blond woman. He completes a wire transfer to a bank in Europe in his name but secretly adds Wyatt's name a cosigner. When he returns home he notices that a picture Wyatt had sent of the blond woman being held captive was taken in his apartment before the pipe started leaking. He realizes that she must have been a conspirator and wisely avoids his apartment which explodes when the superintendent enters to fix the pipe. When Wyatt impersonates Jonathan and attempts to withdraw the funds from the bank he is denied access because of the cosigner. Jonathan agrees to help him withdraw the funds but only if Wyatt splits it with him. After the transaction is complete, Wyatt attempts to shoot Jonathan but before he is able to do so he is shot by the blond woman who quickly leaves. Jonathan leaves the money behind to pursue her and asks her to talk to him but the girl tells she wants to call it off and apologizes to him as she didn't know Bose was going to kill him. The girl gets into a cab and leaves as Jonathan watches her go. Jonathan again crosses path with the blond woman in the next scene they exchange smile as movie comes to a close.

A member of Fringe Festival regulars, The Ladyboys from Bangkok poses at their venue in the Meadows, Edinburgh, prior to their annual performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

While transvestite cabaret is a tourist staple in Bangkok and at tacky beach resorts such as Pattaya, the kathoey (called 'lady boy' in both Thai and English) performers generally wear tatty costumes and move desultorily through their routines, lip synching like wooden marionettes.

Even so, after British theater producer Phillip Gandey saw his first kathoey cabaret at the Mambo Club in Bangkok in 1998, he realized its latent potential and decided to develop the show for a western market. Six years on, his flamboyant gender-bending extravaganza "The Lady Boys of Bangkok" has become a perennial hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is now making waves elsewhere in the UK and in Australia too.

In contrast to the miniscule stages stuck like afterthoughts at the back of restaurants or sidewalk bars in Thailand, the performance space in Edinburgh is a purpose-built tent seating 500. This summer's "Thai Spice Tour 2004," the show's sixth and most successful tour to date, played two and three shows nightly to consistently sold-out crowds. The 17-member cast executed their 20 lip-synched song and dance routines as well as a total of 200 costume changes with all the glitter, glamour and professionalism of a Las Vegas spectacle.

Lavish production numbers ranged from current faves by Beyonce and J-Lo to '80s disco hits and a campy rendition of Maria from "Sound of Music" that morphed into the title song from "Sister Act." By the glittering confetti-strewn finale (a raucous ABBA medley) some 90 minutes later, the entire audience was on its feet clapping and screaming.

"First class, absolutely brilliant," raved a plumpish Elaine Howie from nearby Kirkcaldy. "They've got better bodies than I've ever seen." Her frumpy companion dressed in a nondescript pantsuit and anorak agreed. "We don't usually get all this glamour and diamante in Edinburgh!"

Many communities accept the third sex, from Thailand, Samoa to American Indians and the Philippines. However different societies treat these groups of people from culture to culture. In Thailand, there is a culture where young men exploit their own sexual orientation. These men are known to be a part of the kathoey culture in Thailand. The term “Kathoey” refers to a male to female transgender person in Thailand. Though in fact they are men, they have feminine qualities untypical of a man, not only in appearance or manner. Other societies such as the Western culture call these men effeminate. They are also called “lady-boys” or “sago”, in the Thailand society which means a second kind of women. “For those who are who embark on the road to becoming ‘lady-boys’ are not only accepted by their peers - they are seen by aspiring younger boys as heroines and role models” (Totman). Though they are men, Kathoey men are not equivalent to the modern “trans-woman”, which is referred to a person who is biologically born as a male but feels that this is not a complete description of himself so he would identify himself as a woman. The Thai culture suggests that the person is male appearing in a female identity and is accepted as the third gender; individuals that are neither men nor women.

Though becoming a Kathoey man is sometime the solution for a number of male homosexuals in Thailand. After they become a Kathoey man they have no interest in a female companion. They usually seek male sexual partners who identify themselves as heterosexual. This is usually common since they have become feminine and chosen a complete different image of them self. Their interest of the heterosexual men is that heterosexuality attracts people from the opposite sex, but they are some Kathoey men who still have male genitals.

Some will need hair removal and vocal feminization. Others wear makeup and address themselves with feminine titles such as Mrs., or Ms., while others dress as men.

Kathoey men are identified at a young age, or some are even considered to be born that way. “About five percent of the boys at a Thailand school were openly dressing and expressing themselves as girls” (Totman). Other societies such as the American society would call these human beings transsexuals or even gay, because of the similar meaning to “fairy” or “drag-queens” in the American culture, but the Kathoey lifestyle is more visible and accepted in Thailand.

British Circus: Cirque Surreal

The show is set to take place at the Trafford Centre in Manchester in April before touring nationally. The PR campaign will target students, young professionals and older people, as well as families, focusing on the Manchester area first.

Brazen pitched against fellow Manchester-based agency Fido for the account.

Cirque Surreal blends music, physical theatre and dance with traditional circus acts. It is run by The Arts Exchange, the company behind the Chinese State Circus and the Lady Boys of Bangkok show.

Introducing Posh Venus (Yonlada “Nok” Komklong), Hot Venus (Ploipaitoon “Bobo” Moukprakaaiphed), Cool Venus (Dhanade “Taya” Ruangroongroj), Naughty Venus (Topmonthawan “Gina” Boonchalee) and Sweet Venus (Rachakorn “Amy” Jaroensuk).

Named after a sensuous planet and an alluring carnivorous plant, the group is Thailand’s first katoey band to sign a record deal. The band is backed by Sony BMG, the global music joint venture with a roster of artists such as George Michael, Beyonce and Christina Aguilera.


Venus Flytrap grew out of Sony BMG's innovative project to launch a five-man, ermm women, ermm ladyboys pop group.

About 16 months ago, the record label auditioned katoeys from all over Thailand, searching for five who had the look, the voice and the showmanship.

Hermaphrodite: Parinya Charoenphol

Parinya Kiatbusaba or Parinya Charoenphol (born 1981), more popularly known as Nong Thoom, Nong Toom or Nong Tum (), is probably the best-known kathoey (male-to-female transgendered person) in Thailand. She is a former Muay Thai (Thai boxing) champion and has also worked as a model and actress.

As a young boy, she was already aware of her gender-identity. After a short period as a Buddhist monk, she started to train as a boxer, and eventually joined a boxing camp in Chonburi. Her goal was to make enough money to support her poor parents and to pay for a sex-change operation.

Her public life began in February 1998, with a victory in Bangkok's Lumpini Boxing Stadium, the center of the Muay Thai world. The Thai media were understandably intrigued by the novelty and incongruity of a make-up wearing 16-year-old kathoey, or "lady boy", defeating and then kissing a larger, more muscular opponent.

Although the Thai government had previously blocked kathoey athletes from participating in the national volleyball team for fear of negative reaction from the rest of the world, the Muay Thai establishment embraced Nong Toom, and tourism officials promoted her as "indicative of the wonders to be found" in Thailand. Perhaps not coincidentally, Muay Thai had been in a several-year slump at the time, and Nong Toom had greatly revitalized both media and public interest in the sport, as shown by increased ticket sales and stadium revenue.

She was profiled in several magazines, and appeared in many Thai music videos. Subsequently, her public profile began to fade, but her bouts with a foreigner, as well as her trip to Japan to fight a Japanese challenger, kept her face in the news. By fall of 1998, there was little coverage of Nong Toom to be found in either the mainstream or boxing media.

In 1999, Nong Toom caused considerable publicity by announcing her retirement from kick boxing, her intention to become a singer, and her plan to undergo sex reassignment surgery. Initially she was turned down by some of the Bangkok surgeons she turned to, but then the surgery was performed in 1999.

Parinya Kiatbusaba

A 16-year-old transvestite has caused a sensation in the Thai capital, Bangkok, by winning a kickboxing contest in the city's Lumpini stadium.
Despite taunts from his opponent that he was not a real man, the boxer, Parinya Kiatbusaba, won convincingly in front of thousands of screaming fans.

Wearing red lipstick and pink nail varnish, Mr Parinya planted a delicate kiss on the cheek of his bloodied and demoralised opponent, and said he would use the $900 prize for plastic surgery to help him towards a full sex change.

Sex change teacher gets job back

To students at a US primary school, she was Mr McBeth. Now, after undergoing a sex change, 71-year-old Lily McBeth will return to the classroom as Miss McBeth.

Despite criticism from parents, the board of Eagleswood Elementary School in New Jersey is standing by its decision to allow McBeth to resume working as a substitute teacher.

After two hours of public debate and a private meeting with McBeth and her lawyer, the board took no action on calls by several parents to bar her from returning to the school where she taught for five years before becoming a woman.

"It was magnificent," McBeth said afterward.

"You saw democracy in action."

McBeth, a retired sales executive who was married for 33 years and had three children, underwent gender re-assignment surgery last year and re-applied for her job under her new name.

Meet the sex-change lady mayor and mayoress

The world's first sex-change mayor and mayoress have been elected in Cambridge.
Liberal Democrat mayor Jenny Bailey and her partner Jennifer Liddle were both born men before having operations to become women.

Miss Bailey, 45, who had a sex-change operation in her thirties, had previously married and fathered two children.

She met 49-year-old Miss Liddle, who will be her mayoress, while both were having hormone replacement therapy.

They have served on Cambridge City Council together and share a home with Miss Bailey's children.

Miss Bailey, who takes up office today, said: "So many more things define me than being transgender, a medical condition I had 15 years ago which I have now recovered from.

"I'm proud that I managed to get through something which was quite difficult and managed to come out of it a better person.

"I certainly do not want it to eclipse being mayor."

Miss Bailey, whose father was a prison officer, went to college in Coventry before moving to Cambridge where she worked in radio technology.

She met her future wife aged 24 and, believing that becoming a family man would make her feel "normal", they had two boys, now aged 18 and 20.

However, she was unable to shake off the urge to make the transition from man to a woman and the marriage came to an end.

Hermaphrodites are also Known as a "Kathoey" in Thailand...

The term kathoey or katoey (, ) generally refers to a male-to-female transgender person or an effeminate gay male in Thailand. Related phrases include sao (or phuying) praphet song ("a second kind of woman"), or phet thi sam ("third sex"). The word kathoey is thought to be of Khmer origin. It is most often rendered as ladyboy in English conversation with Thais and this latter expression has become popular across South East Asia except in the Philippines where the term Billyboy is sometimes used.

General description

The term "kathoey" is not an exact equivalent of the modern western transwoman — it suggests that the person is a type of male, unlike the term sao praphet song, which suggests a female sex identity, or phet thee sam, which suggests a third gender. The term phu-ying praphet thi sorng, which can be translated as "second type of woman", is also used to refer to kathoey. Australian scholar of sexual politics in Thailand Peter Jackson claims that the term "kathoey" was used in premodern times to refer to intersexuals, and that the usage changed in the middle of the twentieth century to cover cross-dressing males. The term can refer to males who exhibit varying degrees of femininity — many kathoeys dress as women and undergo feminising medical procedures such as hormone replacement therapy, breast implants, genital reassignment surgery, or Adam's apple reductions. Others may wear makeup and use feminine pronouns, but dress as men, and are closer to the western category of effeminate gay man than transgender.

Kathoeys are often identified at a young age, and are considered to be "born that way". They may have access to hormones (available without prescription) and medical procedures during their teenage years.

The term "kathoey" may be considered pejorative, especially in the form "kathoey-saloey". It has a meaning similar to the English language "fairy" or "queen".

S.Korea's top transgender beauty ties knot

South Korean transgender beauty Harisu tied the knot in Seoul Saturday with her boyfriend singer, pledging to become a "sexy and caring" wife.

Harisu, 32, married 27-year-old rap singer Micky Chung in an upmarket hotel in Seoul. She has been dating the singer since 2005 after they met online.

The marriage ceremony was carried out by Kim Suk-Kwon, a surgeon who performed Harisu's male-to-female sex reassignment surgery in late 1990s.

"I'll become a housewife who is cooking well, sexy and caring," a beaming Harisu told journalists before the wedding ceremony.

"We originally planned to adopt 10 children but decided to settle for only four kids because of the objections from our parents," she said.

Accompanied by both sets of parents, they will leave for the Thai resort island of Koh Samui on Sunday for a honeymoon.

Harisu is the stage name of the transgender entertainer who was born Lee Kyung-Yup.

Hermaphrodite: Stefanie Imbruglia - a first cousin of pop star Natalie Imbruglia

A TRANSSEXUAL is taking on the Howard Government in a bid to be acknowledged as a woman named Stefanie, not a man named Stephen.

Stefanie Imbruglia - a first cousin of pop star Natalie Imbruglia - is fighting a recent law change that forbids her identifying herself as female on her passport.

After living as a woman for two years, Ms Imbruglia, 42, is due to fly to Thailand in October for sex-change surgery that will complete her transition from male to female.

But she has been outraged by legislation enacted by the Government three months ago that has scrapped the right for people in her position to apply for an interim passport that lists "intended" sex rather than current gender.

Ms Imbruglia has been told she will either have to apply for a passport as a man or travel on a document of identity (DOI) that would leave her genderless.

It would not offer her the same level of protection in foreign countries and could lead to her being subjected to strip searches and harassment, says a letter she received from the Department of Foreign Affairs.

"It is completely outrageous," she said. "I am a woman, not a man. I may fly out to Thailand with a penis, but I'm going to come back as a total woman with a vagina so how am I going to get through immigration on a male passport?"

Thailand's Secret Sex: Katoys or Lady-Boys

In Bangkok's notorious red-light area, many of the beautiful Thai girls who work the bars are not what they seem. Known as "katoys," they are in fact men who choose to have sex-change operations so they can work as prostitutes. Many of their male clients never learn the truth.

Nok sits alone in a bar in Patpong Street watching the Western men come and go. She flicks back her long black hair and smiles encouragingly as they pass. A cocktail appears at her table. Nok looks up and blows a crimson kiss at the man who's staring at her from across the bar. Later, consumed by booze and bravado, he approaches her. He tells her she's the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. He says he has money, plenty of money. Nok giggles and takes him by the hand. Later, much later, he slips, satisfied, back to his hotel. He has no idea he has slept with a "katoy."



In Thailand, there are an estimated 10,000 katoys. It's an ambiguous term, spanning full male-to-female transsexuals who have had their penises removed, breast implants and an artificial vagina inserted, to men who have had breast implants but have kept their penises. In addition, there are also transvestites who work the cabaret circuit and male actors who dress as women for television. Eunuchs have been part of Thai society for centuries, living, sometimes reluctantly, as women. They were generally males born with deformed genitals; it was not until 1972 that breast implants and full sex-change operations became available in the country.

Larry Wachowski

It is no big secret that Larry Wachowski, one half of the filmmaking duo "The Wachowski Brothers", has been undergoing gender reassignment. Despite the fact that the secretive Wachowskis never give interviews, the news has been around since well before 2004. Larry has been undergoing a very long and painful sex change to become "Linda", and due to this, the famed duo may be done for.

A source close to the brothers say that Larry is indeed now officially Linda. The major aspects of the surgery have been complete for some time now, and he (I'm sorry, "she") is now undergoing further hormone treatment and psychological therapy. He has also legally changed his name. The change has put a tremendous strain on his relationship with his brother, but Andy sticks by him regardless of his choices. The source also mentioned that Linda, formerly Larry, is contemplating leaving film for good. This was recommended by his therapist. If he does stay in the team, he obviously won't be a "he" anymore, so the team would be called simply "The Wachowskis".

So what of his long time affair with the famous dominatrix Mistress Ilsa? Well Larry has always been fascinated, if not obsessed, with lesbianism. So he would still be "gay" so to speak, but in the woman + woman category. All of his most recent public appearances were as a woman, save his court appearance, in which he was still very effeminate.

Unusual perks: Goldman Sachs covers sex changes

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- Wall Street is typically considered a pretty conservative place to work. But the classic white-shoe investment bank is loosening things up by adding health benefits that cover sex-change operations.

Not only is Goldman Sachs ranked No. 9 on Fortune's list of 100 Best Companies to Work For, it also appears on what could be a list of transgendered job-seekers' ideal employers as well.

Goldman added health-insurance coverage of sex reassignment surgery as part of a push last year to attract top talent and recruit and retain a more diverse workforce, the company said.

The surgery alone could cost an individual anywhere from $5,000 to $150,000 if they paid out of pocket, depending on their particular situation, said Pauline Park, chair of the New York Association for Gender Rights Advocacy, a group that campaigns for transgender rights. That figure doesn't include hormone and other drug treatments.

Goldman Sachs (GS, Fortune 500)' plan covers the actual surgery, as well as transgender-related prescription drugs, such as testosterone injections, said spokeswoman Gia Morón. It does not cover electrolysis and other cosmetic treatments, she said.

Gender Gap: What were the real reasons behind David Reimer's suicide?

Just shy of a month ago, I got a call from David Reimer's father telling me that David had taken his own life. I was shocked, but I cannot say I was surprised. Anyone familiar with David's life—as a baby, after a botched circumcision, he underwent an operation to change him from boy to girl—would have understood that the real mystery was how he managed to stay alive for 38 years, given the physical and mental torments he suffered in childhood and that haunted him the rest of his life. I'd argue that a less courageous person than David would have put an end to things long ago.

After David's suicide, press reports cited an array of reasons for his despair: bad investments, marital problems, his brother's death two years earlier. Surprisingly little emphasis was given to the extraordinary circumstances of his upbringing. This was unfortunate because to understand David's suicide, you first need to know his anguished history, which I chronicled in my book As Nature Made Him:The Boy Who Was Raised As a Girl.

David Reimer was one of the most famous patients in the annals of medicine. Born in 1965 in Winnipeg, he was 8 months old when a doctor used an electrocautery needle, instead of a scalpel, to excise his foreskin during a routine circumcision, burning off his entire penis as a result. David's parents (farm kids barely out of their teens) were referred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, home of the world's leading expert in gender identity, psychologist Dr. John Money, who recommended a surgical sex change, from male to female. David's parents eventually agreed to the radical procedure, believing Dr. Money's claims that this was their sole hope for raising a child who could have heterosexual intercourse—albeit as a sterile woman with a synthetic vagina and a body feminized with estrogen supplements.

For Dr. Money, David was the ultimate experiment to prove that nurture, not nature, determines gender identity and sexual orientation—an experiment all the more irresistible because David was an identical twin. His brother, Brian, would provide the perfect matched control, a genetic clone raised as a boy.

David's infant "sex reassignment" was the first ever conducted on a developmentally normal child. (Money had helped to pioneer the procedure in hermaphrodites.) And according to Money's published reports through the 1970s, the experiment was a success. The twins were happy in their assigned roles: Brian a rough and tumble boy, his sister Brenda a happy little girl. Money was featured in Time magazine and included a chapter on the twins in his famous textbook Man & Woman, Boy & Girl.

The reality was far more complicated. At age 2, Brenda angrily tore off her dresses. She refused to play with dolls and would beat up her brother and seize his toy cars and guns. In school, she was relentlessly teased for her masculine gait, tastes, and behaviors. She complained to her parents and teachers that she felt like a boy; the adults—on Dr. Money's strict orders of secrecy—insisted that she was only going through a phase. Meanwhile, Brenda's guilt-ridden mother attempted suicide; her father lapsed into mute alcoholism; the neglected Brian eventually descended into drug use, pretty crime, and clinical depression.

Mary Claire Cheney (born March 14, 1969) is the second daughter of Dick Cheney, the former Vice President of the United States, and his wife, Lynne Cheney.

Mary Cheney is more than just a "lesbian". She was birthed through a incestuous relationship. A picture is worth a thousand words. In this case the silence is deafening.

Picture the photo of the Vice President and his wife and their newborn grandchild -- fresh from delivery and still wrapped in his hospital-issue receiving blanket. What's missing here? The child's parents, of course.

The fact that this White House chose to announce the birth of Vice President Cheney's grandson -- Samuel David Cheney -- with a photo of the baby without either one of his two mothers in sight should come as no surprise. This administration continues to try to have its cake and eat it too when it comes to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans.

Think about it. Samuel is the Cheney's sixth grandchild -- but can you recall seeing photos of any of the other grandchildren? The only thing that makes Samuel's birth newsworthy at all is that his birth mother, Mary Cheney, is both a lesbian and the daughter of the man who is second in command of an administration that has been more destructive to the lives of LGBT parents and their families than any other group in American history.
