The singer Lady Ga-Ga has revealed her male persona "Jo Calderone" in Japan's September Issue of Vogue.
According to the New York Magazine, she (or he) provided the following during the scheduled Interview:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Palermo, Sicily
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO / YOUR
OCCUPATION?
Mechanic for my dad's business. This is the first time I've had my picture taken.
WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOU WANTED TO TO THIS?
Well, I always helped my dad at work, since I was a kid. I thought it would be fun to have my picture taken.
WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS?
I'd love to own my own car shop, I have a bunch of my own ‘muscle’ cars. Maybe if I take some more pictures I can afford it.
WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO LADY GAGA?
I met her at a shoot Nick Knight was doing. She's fuckin beautiful, and funny, and interesting. I was a little nervous for Nick to start shooting. She said, "Don't be baby, you were "born this way." I took her out after. The rest is private ;)
It seems as if Lady Ga-Ga is reading the September 1970 issue of LIFE Magazine, you know the issue that showcased, The Male Plumage: He-men return to elegance...
Story Continues...
In 1970, it was exposed that Dandyism had returned in the pages of LIFE magazine:
ReplyDeleteA dandy[1] (also known as a beau and gallant[2]) is a man who places particular importance upon physical appearance, refined language, and leisurely hobbies, pursued with the appearance of nonchalance in a cult of Self.[3] Historically, especially in late 18th- and early 19th-century Britain, a dandy, who was self-made, often strove to imitate an aristocratic style of life despite coming from a middle-class background.
Now here she is posing on the cover of a Japan (men) Magazine in their September issue?
ReplyDeleteFrom Life:
Franco Piscardi, who is 17 and works as an automobile mechanic, wears a nylon print shirt he bought for $5 in a Rome flea market.
Most of those "Dandy" men were actually born as hermaphrodites.

"The greatest revolution of our times has to do with the long, hard looks being taken by numberless human beings at themselves in their relationships to each other – as members of nations, of different races – and of the two sexes. " – Dr. Mary Calderone, M.D.

Edward Steichen (Mary Steichen's father or Mary Steichen Calderone)
ReplyDeleteMaster of Photography
In 1923, the Condé Nast group named him as head of photography; Edward Steichen therefore had two prestigious magazines under his responsibility: Vogue and Vanity Fair.
In the 1930s, Edward Steichen published a book of photos for children entitled The First Picture Book (1930) and closed his studio (1938).
Mary Steichen was born in Paris to American parents. Her mother was a singer, and her father, Edward Steichen, was a noted photographer.
Who was Mary's mother? She was a well known singer.

ReplyDeleteEduard Steichen and Clara E. Smith have 2 children. Mary and Charlotte (or Kate Steichen).
Mary Steichen was the first daughter of Edward Steichen and Clara E. Smith. Her father, who had emigrated from Luxembourg as a small child and grown up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, became one of the country’s most important photographers, spending much of his life in New York and Europe. Her mother had been raised in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri and was a singer and musician. The parenting styles of the Steichens differed: Edward’s lifestyle was bohemian, associating with avant-garde artists and excelling at photographing nudes, and Clara tended to worry about their daughter’ moral values. In May 1915, when Mrs. Steichen moved to France with her younger daughter Kate, Mary chose to live with her father in New York City.
In 1922, Steichen divorced from Clara and returned from France to New York where, in 1923, he married Dana Desboro Glover. Steichen became the chief photographer for Condé Nast (1923-38). He produced monthly celebrity portraits for Vanity Fair and fashion spreads for Vogue. Edward was considered the most glamorous name in photography - and the best paid. But his merger of commerce and high art made him a controversial figure. His celebrity images - e.g. of Marlene Dietrich below on the right - are unsurpassed. By 1927, he relied on artificial illumination for dramatic oppositions of light and dark. It lent them a look of modernity and elegance, in accordance with Hollywood glamour and the streamlined art deco design aesthetic of the late 1920s and 1930s. At Vogue, Steichen redefined fashion photography and proposed a new prototype of the confident, bold and independent female beauty. He refused to distinguish between commercial and high art. Therefore, many colleagues, including Alfred Stieglitz, chastised him for forsaking the ideals of art for money. In 1930, he published, together with his daughter Mary, The First Picture Book: Everyday Things for Babies.

ReplyDeleteDo you know Lady Ga-Ga's link to the Steichen family? Maybe she's related to a member of the Calderone? It's rather strange that she used the name "Joe Calderone" and clearly she's sending a subliminal message by using a fake name and posing on the cover of Vogue Men Magazine in Japan. It's rather odd don't you think?
