Androgynous Female: Meshell Ndegeocello.

The androgynous female black American singer songwriter bassist multi-instrumentalist auditioned for Living Colour in the early 90s, recorded a still unreleased album of Jimi Hendrix songs, before being the first signing on Madonna's Maverick record label, releasing her funky debut Plantation Lullabies in 1993.
Since then she has released six albums of diverse quality encompassing funk, rock, jazz and rap as well as numerous collaborations, her intimate soulful voice and detailed instrumentation bringing a unique individuality and passion to all that she does. Always surprising with each new release, her unpredictable, highly personal work and sometimes confronting approach to race and gender means that aside from some minor flirtations with the charts she remains an unknown outsider.
