The Hermaphrodite: Jin Xing

"....Jin Xing, a 27-year-old Army colonel, quivered with trepidation as he lay alone in the Chinese hospital room. His father, also a military officer, didn’t know why Jin was going under the knife and, as he rushed to the clinic, worried that his son had suffered a medical emergency. It was the Chinese Lunar New Year festival, the traditional time for family reunions. “My father walked in, looked at me, and asked, ‘Why are you here?’ ” recalls Jin. “That’s when I told him I was going to have a sex-change operation the next day to become a woman.” Jin’s father paused, inhaled deeply on his cigarette, and said, “Finally, you’ll be matched up. All these years he secretly knew I was born the wrong gender.” --- Reports Newsweek and the hermaphrodite Jin Xing shared how she lived as a soldier in the military and then transformed into a woman who now performs as a dancer...

  1. Dr. Quentin Costa is a plastic surgeon from Atlanta, Georgia. He appears briefly in two episodes of the second season and plays a major role in the third season. He is portrayed as a a womanizer and a playboy but is later discovered to actually be a eunuch. At the end of episode 3.14 ("Cherry Peck"), it is revealed that Costa does not have a penis. Early in the next episode he attributes this to a genetic disorder known as 5-alpha-reductase deficiency that he suffers as a product of incest. He is one of the suspects for being the Carver a serial mutilator, and eventually ends up being him and is discovered to be helped by the person investigating the crimes, Kit McGraw, who actually is his sister and incestuous lover.

  2. Dr. Costas had no penis. He was born - the product of incest, naturally - with 5-alpha-reductase deficiency, which in the logic of the show means no genitals whatsoever. Any man would find it dispiriting. And add to Quentin's problems that his beloved and equally inbred twin sister, Catherine, suffered with more visible if less symbolic deformities.

As a child consigned to a convent, Quentin vowed to reverse Catherine's ugliness by mastering plastic surgery. Creepily close to her brother in a Flowers-in-the-Attic way, Catherine signed on as his accessory in demented vengeance on a world of appearances. And somehow along the way she became Kit (Rhona Mitra), the sinuous detective who was this season's enigmatic femme fatale. To protect her brother and throw off the investigation, Kit also slashed and carved.
