The Hermaphrodite: Farzana or Faizan

'My life has completely changed but I hope I can still retain my friendships. I hope that I can stay in touch with all my friends and that people don't judge me for this...I have been sick for a very long time and now that I am healthy I am thankful. I don't care about whether I am a boy or a girl as long as I am alive... Quoting: Farzana

A 17-year-old hermaphrodite in Pakistan is happy to be alive – after receiving medical attention he so desperately needed. According to reports, the teenager was born as a hermaphrodite and her (or his) body was beginning to shut down due a severe hormonal imbalance:
A 17-year-old Pakistani girl, who had been very sick for the past few months and turned into a boy after a sex-change operation, is grateful to be healthy and alive now and said post-operation: 'I don't care about whether I am a boy or a girl as long as I am alive.' Farzana, who was critically ill, was taken to a hospital in Lahore from Rahim Yar Khan city in Punjab province. 'She had been ill for nearly a year and we have had several consultations,' Express Tribune quoted Rehan, a doctor, as saying. 'I had told her parents that she had a rare genetic condition and that she was suffering from a severe hormonal imbalance.' The doctor said: 'Farzana has hermaphrodite genes and we needed to operate on her soon because her body was beginning to shut down.' Farzana's worried father Ishtiaq said: 'The doctor came to us and said that we had the choice to see our daughter die or to see her become our son....

The Hermaphrodite: Matthew or Adele Markham

Born as a hermaphrodite and forced to live life as a boy, Matthew decided to transform into a girl name Adele and live life accordingly. At birth, doctors had noticed problems with his genitals and informed Matthew's parents that he wasn't developing as a normal child. As Matthew grew into puberty and faced his teen years, he began to feel like a girl on the inside despite his outward manly appearance. At age 28, Matthew transformed into Adele and has shared his story with MailOnline (UK):

For Adele was born with an extra sexual gene and though technically male - and growing up as a 'boy' - she always had doubts about who she really was. When 'Matthew' was born, Adele's parents were delighted to be told they had a son as they already had two daughters. But as Matthew started to grow into a toddler, the family GP noticed problems with his genitals. 'The doctor told my parents that I wasn't developing normally,' said Adele. 'The doctor told my mum and dad I would need an operation when I was older. But they didn't know what had caused the defect.'

A Hermaphrodite Child

"A four-year-old child in Pasirhuni village, West Java, has been found with both male and female genitalia. Around three months ago, the parents of the child, born a girl, noticed a small penis growing in the middle of her vagina, said Pasirhuni village chief Agus Suparman who lives near the girl's house. Agus said the child, currently undergoing a medical examination, had behaved like a boy, refusing to play with dolls and preferring to wear boys' clothes. Hermaphroditism is a genetic anomaly, gynecologist Hanny Ronosulistyo said as quoted by kompas.com. Hanny recommended the child's parents to allow their child to grow naturally and not attempt to force the child to act like a girl or boy...." --- Reports The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network.

The Hermaphrodite: Deena Kaye Myers or Scott Myers

"A Virginia prison inmate born a male but surgically altered to be female because of severe birth defects has filed suit against state officials. Though convicted of 11 felonies as a male and imprisoned in the all-male Deerfield Correctional Center, the state birth certificate for Deena Kaye Myers, also known as Scott Myers, says she is female. Among other things, Myers' suit complains that she is being held in an all-male dormitory, that the department has refused to transfer her to a female prison, and that her rights under the Constitution and the American Disabilities Act have been violated. The suit filed this month asks for $25 million in damages and that prison authorities change her records to show that she is female and that she be transferred to a female facility. Myers' suit alleges officials told her she would not be transferred to a female prison because she was sent to prison as a male when sentenced. Myers was sentenced starting in 2001 for robbery, auto theft and other crimes in Danville and Pittsylvania County. Larry Traylor, spokesman for the Virginia Department of Corrections, said the department does not comment on pending litigation. Myers was born Christmas Eve 1981 with a birth defect so severe that males with the condition were often surgically altered to females. Myers was sent from Danville Memorial Hospital to Duke University Medical Center for a series of neonatal operations. On Feb. 18, 1982, a Virginia birth certificate was filed recording Myers' sex as female." --- Reports WSLS 10 in Roanoke, VA.

Hermaphrodite Removes His Testicles In Public Park

"The 22-year-old is believed to have carried out the horrifying DIY castration in a bid to change sex. He waited nearly 24 hours before staggering into hospital. On arriving at accident and emergency, he told stunned staff he had felt "a lot less pain" than he had expected. He left after being treated with swabs and stitches - and was advised to seek psychiatric help. A spokesman for Derbyshire's Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Trust said last night: "A man in his early twenties presented himself at the hospital minus his testicles, which he had removed the previous day. "He was treated, then discharged from A&E. We can say no more because of patient confidentiality - but this is pretty unusual." It is believed the man, who has not been named, was suffering from "gender confusion issues" and may have been attempting a home sex change before hurling his unwanted privates into Queens Park, Chesterfield." ---Andrew Parker reports from The Sun in the UK.
